Domenico Formica was born in Italy in 1980 and received the B.S. and M.S. degree in biomedical engineering from the “Università Campus Bio-Medico” of Rome, in 2002 and 2004 respectively. From 2004 to 2007 he was PhD student in bioengineering at the “Università Campus Bio-Medico” of Rome and in February 2008 he received his PhD with the thesis “Novel Approaches to Functional Assessment and Interaction Control for Robot-aided Neurorehabilitation”. From May to November 2007 he was visiting student at the Newman Laboratory for Biomechanics and Human Rehabilitation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge (MA). In this period, he worked on new robot-based algorithms for quantitative measure of muscular tone in patients with neurological injuries, with particular attention to the estimation of the passive stiffness of the wrist joint. From March 2008 he is a post-doc fellow at the Laboratory of Biomedical Robotics and Biomicrosystems of the “Università Campus Bio-Medico” of Rome, working on the development and experimental design of machatronic systems for monitoring children behaviour and their application to early diagnosis of neuro-developmental disorders. His research interests are in the areas of mechatronic technologies for the study of human motor control, with particular attention to neuro-development, quantitative algorithms for clinical assessment of patients with neuro-muscular disorders and novel robotic devices for rehabilitation motor therapy after neurological injury, with special attention to the issue of interaction control.
Scientific interests:
- Application of mechatronic technologies to the study of human motor control, with particular attention to neuro-development.
- Design and validation of quantitative algorithms for clinical assessment of patients with neuro-muscular disorders.
- Design and development of novel robotic devices for rehabilitation motor therapy after neurological injury, with special attention to the issue of interaction control for regulating force between the robot and the patient and to the clinical validation of the developed solutions.
